In 2023-24, India should sell over six lakh EVs, a milestone and proof of its continuous progress toward a sustainable, inexpensive, and contemporary transport environment. This year’s Union Budget includes FAME, PLI, and Rs 20,000 crore for the Green Hydrogen Mission to promote EV uptake and clean transportation. Besides the FAME initiative, the Indian government has also promoted green mobility by installing charging infrastructure nationwide. The government aims to have 500,000 EV charging stations across the country by 2025 to make e-scooter charging simpler.

EVs will address concerns about green mobility

This green equation also includes the private sector and consumers.  The automotive sector has contributed Rs 74,850 crore against the government’s Rs 42,500 crore five-year goal for EV research and manufacture commencing in FY2023. Consumers, particularly new buyers and purchasing influencers are coming of age. Electric cars are environmentally friendly, convenient, and cost-effective. Compact vehicles, notably electric scooters, let Gen Y and millennials satisfy their zeal and duty. As our cities become transit-difficult and living gas chambers, EVs will address concerns about green mobility and how it might tackle urban congestion and environmental issues.

The private sector is crucial to India’s sustainable transport solutions. Private sector investment in R&D, manufacture, and deployment of EVs nationwide will lower their cost, expedite uptake, and generate jobs. Private sector EV sales may reduce air pollution and traffic congestion in India. With green mobility and government and private sector backing, India can move to a more sustainable and cleaner transportation industry.
